Tanjung Aru Beach Resort, Kota Kinabalu This is one of the oldest and best of the so-called "5-star" resorts in Sabah; only ten minutes from the airport and situated on its own little peninsular of land, the hotel caters for the discerning tourist who enjoys the best of everything: several good restaurants with both European and Asian food, a beautiful vaulted entrance lobby and lounge, an arcade of shops and places to hire bikes etc, plus two excellent pools and its own private beach facing the coral islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. A day trip to the Orang Utan Sanctuary at Sepilok or to see Mt. Kinabalu is easily arranged through Discovery Tours who have an office on the premises. As an alternative, you can also take the hotel bus out to Shangri La's other resort, the Rasa Ria, about 50 kilometers up the coast and see their mini-sanctuary and nature walk. There are many other enjoyable day excursions available.
