Buffet lunch at Cafe Rosita. (B/L/D) Iban Dancer Day 3, 4 & 5 Mulu visit - flight by aircraft (Fokker 50 or Twin Otter) of Malaysian Airlines to Mulu airfield, about 30 minutes flying time. Flights depart early morning and early afternoon and are weather dependent, which is why we put this trip in the middle and not at the end! In the mornings the airfield at Mulu is often covered in mist and fog and by early evening the daily thunderstorm is usually in progress around the mountain! Arrive mid-morning and check in to the Park HQ/Royal Mulu Resort Hotel; after lunch, meet the guides and proceed through the National Park up to Deer and Lang caves; Deer cave is famous for its sheer size and Lang's has an exceptional array of stalagmites and -tites. The afternoon is rounded off at the viewing platform waiting for the millions of bats emerging at sunset. Evening back at the Park HQ and riverside canteen or the hotel where there is a pool built 20 foot up in the woodwork and once or twice a week the hotel staff are persuaded to demonstrate local dancing. Dinner al fresco in the huge unwalled dining room.(D) Day two brings the chance for a boat trip upriver as far as Clearwater cave which meanders 70 kms underground and emerges into a huge clear rock pool where you can swim or just relax with a picnic lunch. Returning downstream in the afternoon., there is the chance to visit a Penan settlement and sample their wares, including blow-pipes and handicrafts. Evening at leisure. (B/L) On day three there is the chance to try kayaking or rock climbing (not included) before the return flight to Miri.(B/D) Return flights are included plus overnight accommodation either at the Park cabins or at the Royal Mulu Resort (L extra cost - see below), whose package includes all guides, boat trips, meals and airport transfers. See life unchanged for 50 years - no electricity, no cars, no TV, no phone. Some of these Longhouses were built/repaired by the British Army in the 60's at the time of Confrontation with Indonesia. Read "World Within" by Tom Harrison for a further insight into the Kelabit Highlands , if you can get hold of it. (L/D) Second Day - early start for Pa Lungan. A brisk 4 hour hike, tiring but quite manageable even for kids. Lunch along the way; arrive mid-afternoon.
